Masterclass Vol. 2 – The Sydney Workshop Low-Down

"There isn’t a fool-proof plan to build a program from zero and we’ve learnt so much during the process of establishing Limelight Academy. With its one-of-a-kind concept, Limelight Academy offers an opportunity to upcoming artists to learn and develop new skills in the field of projection mapping, and most importantly, to showcase their artwork at a light festival.

Masterclass Vol. 2 came to life in partnership with Vivid Sydney at Chatswood 2019 – a festival we could only dream of to collaborate with! We are very proud of how far Limelight Academy has come, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

After the first Masterclass, our team reflected on the experience we had, discussed what went well and identified some new opportunities for improvement. As a result, we decided that a site visit was essential and a very worthwhile investment – so we took the Masterclass Vol. 2 participants to Sydney. A site visit is not only a great team building exercise, it also provides an opportunity to get to know the culture of the place and the building we work with that they can integrate into their artworks later on. This is an essential part of the Limelight philosophy that we aim to pass on to the Masterclass participants.

The first Masterclass took place in Budapest, then we travelled to Norway for the festival, which meant the participants only got to experience the Norwegian way of living after their artworks were completed. The participants of the second Masterclass had the chance to spend 5 days in Sydney with us working hard whilst having fun. We wanted to make sure that there is a good balance between the hours we spent enclosed in a room, learning about history, storytelling, 3D modelling and software, and the time we spent exploring a new city and getting to know each other.

As for the best moments, just check out the workshop video here. We’ve also enjoyed the true Aussie experience provided by the organisers of Vivid Sydney at Chatswood: a traditional beach BBQ where we were basically spoilt by our amazing hosts. Thank you so much, guys, we had a blast!

Of course, we encountered a few difficulties and we also had to overcome a bad jet lag after traveling to the other side of the world, but we are very proud to be in a position where we are able to provide this experience to our Masterclass participants.

As always, the process of picking only a handful out of the many talented artists that applied to the program was difficult. This was our second program, and thanks to the success of the first Masterclass, the number of applicants increased significantly. Diversity is essential to our philosophy, and we were lucky to be able to select a team of upcoming artists with different backgrounds and experience. Everyone has their own style, their workflows and ideas on how to transform the same building. This is what makes Limelight Academy so valuable to us!

The artworks of the Masterclass Vol. 2 participants are nearing completion, and we can’t wait to show you the amazing stuff they’ve created. The best is yet to come, so stay tuned!"
